Background
My background outside of interiors has become just as valuable as my experience within them. Years spent working with textiles, fabrication, carpentry, landscaping, graphics, and other forms of design has given me a practical understanding of how things actually come together. It influences everything from the way I develop a custom detail to the way I communicate with a contractor or select a material. I’m interested not only in how a space looks when it’s finished, but in the thought, craft, and decisions that make it work.
How Byal
Came To Be
BYAL Design is an independent residential interior design firm based in Los Angeles, founded and led by me, Adam Lee. The studio grew out of a lifelong interest in designing, creating, and transforming the spaces around me — an interest that began long before I knew interior design could become a profession.
Raised in California and shaped by years spent throughout the West Coast, including several years in Portland, Oregon, I’ve moved nearly twenty times throughout my life. With every move came a new space, a new set of limitations, and a new opportunity to create something that felt like home. That experience taught me just how meaningful it can be to take an unfamiliar space and make it feel like your own — a perspective that continues to influence the way I approach every project today.
A Life
Of creating
That interest found its way into just about everything I did growing up. I was always making something — sewing, building furniture, working with my hands, rearranging rooms, designing graphics, screen printing, creating websites, or finding some new project to obsess over. Each one taught me to look at things a little differently: how an idea takes shape, how materials come together, and how something imagined can eventually become real. What started as simple curiosity gradually became the foundation for the way I approach design today.
Making
The Most Of It
A lot of that early experimentation happened on a very small budget. As a kid, if I wanted to change my room or make something for my space, my budget was whatever I could earn doing chores. Working within those limitations taught me to see potential where there wasn’t much to work with, to understand where a little investment could make a big difference, and to care about the details even when the resources were limited. It’s a perspective I’ve carried with me into professional design — one that allows me to move comfortably between highly customized, luxury residences and projects where making the most of what already exists is just as important.

DESIGN
BYAL was created around a simple philosophy: with an open mind and a creative direction, every space has the potential to become something memorable. I’m drawn to the process of taking spaces that feel cold, overlooked, or lacking in personality and finding the adjustments needed to give them an entirely new life. Sometimes that means rethinking the layout, introducing color, layering materials, or simply seeing the space from a different perspective. Whatever the approach, the goal is to uncover what a space can become rather than accepting it as it is.
That perspective is what keeps me excited about this work. I see every project as an opportunity to transform the way a space looks, feels, and is experienced. By approaching each room with curiosity and creative intention, I aim to create interiors that feel distinctive, full of character, and ultimately memorable.
